Mission Statement

The Bronx Studio School for Writers and Artists (BSSWA) was founded in September 2004 in the Hunts Point-Longwood section of the South Bronx by a fierce collective of teachers, families, and partners. Under no circumstances shall we accept a student’s past academic history, emotional challenges, or socio-economic status as an excuse not to meet our collective mission to cultivate generations of community-based, college bound, scholar-activists committed to leading wide-awake, literacy-rich lives and improving the quality of the world around them.

Vision Statement

Classroom:
Within the classroom, we shall provide an equitable education that challenges all students to use art and writing to think creatively, discover their passions, and take ownership of their learning. We shall empower students through teaching culturally relevant material that honors student voice and allows for student choice.

School:
Within the school, we shall educate, empower, and embolden our community through creating a welcoming environment that cultivates individuals to respect differences, feel ownership, and have the courage to take initiative and lead.

Community:
Within the larger community, we shall foster collaboration between school members, families, and neighborhood organizations. We shall reach out to create partnerships to educate each other, empower families, and embolden our students

Mission Statement

Our mission at Bronx Studio School for Writers and Artists is to;
Educate, Empower, & Embolden…

Instructional Focus Statement

Throughout the 2023-2024 school year, teachers will plan for an overarching daily focus question that will be answered by students after engaging in student centered activities.

Core Values

BSSWA has five core values. Our commitment, first and foremost, to:
  1. Achieve academic excellence
  2. Extend a helping hand to those in need
  3. Maintain a peacekeeping culture
  4. Summon the courage to express our creativity (“think differently!”)
  5. Demonstrate pride in our school work as well as the accomplishments and gains of others (school spirit), define what it means to be a scholar-activist at BSSWA
